The Courier Of The Czar - WIP1

this is a first character pass, black and whites, to see the direction I'm taking with the story "Michael Strogoff - The Courier of the Czar"

C&C and tomatoes (so expensive) are most welcome
I'll post progress with the project as it goes

  9. :)
thanks for taking the time on this Denis.
I'm obviously not as familiar with the story as you are..
I had no intention of creating a documentary\ historical piece- as this would not be possible in our class time budget (research wise). this is based of jule verne's descriptions in the book, while I am allowed to push the look I want so many things are actually taken from contemporary references. in other words- Jack sparrow, the real one, was nothing like a rolling stone rocker, but "pirates of the caribbean" isn't a historical piece..

The Tartars, described in the book, did not have "one" look, as they were combined from different tribes. some looked more "asian like" (mongol related I'm assuming) some "turk like".
after looking at all the photos I found of them the main one I chose to follow was a famous image by Ilya Repin, and perhaps he himself wasn't true to reality (though I doubt that). I am sorry if it's not working with your idea of the tartars but thats pretty much how he described them..and I liked it

I'm not sure what you mean by "not russian at all" but I am aware the haircuts are not from 19th century, I will try a more historical hairstyle with nadia and michael for second pass. the clothe on the other hand are very true to russian illustration from that time same goes for the tartars.

regarding size problem- yes, it is something I will need to solve, for the Kahn is not meant to be a giant. "Soldier A" on the other hand is a "Hagrid" like giant, so he will probably stay over the top big.

Bottom line- your input is probably more true to the origin than anyone else I know at school, so thats great to have, and if I'll have the time I will try to address those notes- but keep in mind, it is an elaborate project and I am making changes as I like.

I cannot open the .ru links you sent from school (I'm assuming it's some kind of system block by Russia or US) but I'll check them from home- if you have any other ideas on how I can push a more Russian look into this- I'm all ear, and I would love to use your notes.
